In this issue of the journal we have a number of papers from the Middle East and India.

A paper from Jordan looked at the most common factors contributing to urinary tract infections (UTI) during pregnancy, among women in North Jordan. Data collection was performed during the period between January and October 2008. From 6,786 visits to gynecological clinics in North Jordan, 181 pregnant women with presence of bacteuria in urine cultures were chosen to participate in this survey. The authors concluded that increasing awareness of girls about signs and symptoms of urinary tract infection in general and especially during pregnancy, in addition to prevention, precautions and treatment, during secondary school, and maybe earlier, this may be a satisfactory background to prevent UTI in potential mothers.

A paper from Iraq looked at the effects of smoking on the semen parameters in infertile men in Erbil. A total of 110 cigarette smokers and 110 strictly non-smoking primary infertility patients were included in the study after strict patient selection criteria were taken into consideration. The authors concluded that cigarette smoking may affect semen quality through its effect on sperm motility.

Dr Safaa from Iraq looked at the issue of Medical ethics and torture. The author stressed that because of the duty to promote and protect prisoner's wellbeing, physician's who work in prisons should monitor human rights during their medical work. They can discern signs of abuse even when they have not witnessed the abuse. Also, they can see the prisoners who have been concealed from customary monitors, such as delegates of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Most medical societies endorse codes prescribing physicians complicity with torture; and they align with a torturing government's policy of no accountability.
