ANTI-SMOKING MOVEMENT IN PAKISTAN

In response to intense pressure and lobbying of national and international organizations, the government of Pakistan has changed the health warning from "Smoking is injurious to health-Ministry of Health to "Smoking causes cancer and Heart diseases-Ministry of Health" and now it is at more prominent place on cigarette packet-both in national language (Urdu) and English.

Smoking is already ban in schools, colleges, universities, public offices, public places, and public transport and in domestic flights for more than one decade. To strengthen the anti-smoking movement, Pakistan International Airlines, the national flag carrier, has now banned smoking in its all international flights as well.

Cigarette industry is one of few institutions which pay full revenue to government. To get real success in Anti-Smoking efforts, the government has to find out alternate ways of getting revenue.
